3. Founding team and leadership

The technical lineage of ANYbotics began at ETH Zurich in 2009, where researchers worked on legged locomotion for difficult terrain. ANYbotics was incorporated in 2016 to industrialize that work. Co-founder and CEO Péter Fankhauser developed perception and motion-planning algorithms for legged robots during his doctorate at ETH Zurich.

The company lists Marco Hutter, Hanspeter Fässler and Roland Siegwart among its co-founders or founding advisers. Hutter’s research group became closely associated with the ANYmal platform, while Siegwart has led ETH Zurich’s Autonomous Systems Lab. The current executive team also includes CFO Fredrik Isler, chief revenue officer Thierry Obédé and CTO Andrea Corda. This mix reflects the company’s transition from research spin-off to a business that must sell, commission and support robots inside regulated industrial sites.

4. Products and programs

ANYmal is the company’s standard industrial inspection robot. It combines a four-legged base with autonomous navigation and a sensor payload for reading gauges, identifying thermal anomalies, recording sound and inspecting equipment. The robot is intended for metal stairs, gratings, uneven surfaces and multi-level facilities where wheeled systems may be constrained.

ANYmal X is the hazardous-area version for oil, gas and chemical facilities. ANYbotics says it is certified under ATEX and IECEx requirements for operation up to Zone 1 IIB explosive environments. Its standard inspection head includes optical zoom, thermal imaging, microphones, lidar and lighting; optional sensing can measure combustible or toxic gases.

Data Navigator extends the product from mobile data collection into asset management. Launched in 2025, it organizes visual, thermal, acoustic and gas readings around equipment and inspection points, supports historical comparisons, and can run in the cloud or on-premises, including air-gapped environments. It is significant because industrial customers buy maintenance outcomes, not simply robot movement.

5. Core technology

ANYbotics’ technical advantage begins with legged mobility. Four actuated legs allow ANYmal to climb industrial stairs, cross grating and adapt to uneven or slippery ground. Lidar, depth cameras and onboard computation support mapping, localization, obstacle detection and route execution. Operators first define routes and inspection points; the robot can then repeat missions and return measurements tied to the same assets and locations.

The sensing layer converts mobility into useful work. Cameras can read analogue instruments and document equipment condition. Thermal imaging can reveal overheating components. Acoustic sensing can detect abnormal sound patterns, leaks or partial discharge. Gas payloads can measure hazardous concentrations. The resulting data can be sent into Data Navigator or integrated with enterprise systems. GE Vernova separately describes using ANYmal data and software interfaces in its Asset Performance Management workflow.

This architecture is less about a single general intelligence model than reliable coordination among locomotion, mapping, mission planning, sensing and data systems. The robot’s value therefore depends as much on repeatability and integration as on spectacular movement.

6. Financing history

ANYbotics announced a $50 million Series B in May 2023. The round was led by Walden Catalyst Ventures and NGP Capital, with participation from Bessemer Venture Partners, Aramco Ventures, Swisscom Ventures and other investors. The company said the capital would support international deployments and product development.

In December 2024, ANYbotics announced an additional $60 million financing led by Qualcomm Ventures and Supernova Invest, with TDK Ventures and other new and existing investors participating. Qualcomm Ventures describes this as a Series B2 and says it brought the combined Series B to $110 million. ANYbotics stated that total funding had reached more than $130 million. The company did not disclose a valuation in those announcements.

The funding record demonstrates strong investor support for industrial inspection, but it does not disclose revenue, gross margin or the cost of operating customer fleets.

7. Partnerships and deployment

ANYbotics has unusually concrete customer evidence for a mobile robotics company. Outokumpu said in June 2024 that three ANYmal robots were operating at sites in Germany, Sweden and Finland after an initial agreement and pilot. At the Avesta site, the company reported 90 inspection points per shift and 270 per day. These figures come from the customer, making them stronger evidence than a supplier-only demonstration.

Petrobras announced a $4 million acquisition of six ANYmal X units for testing and development, with delivery planned for 2024. The wording matters: the purchase is real, but Petrobras described qualification, testing and development rather than a completed fleet-wide rollout.

GE Vernova confirms a technology collaboration in which ANYmal data can flow into its Asset Performance Management software. ANYbotics also publishes named case studies across cement, mining, power and offshore energy. A 2026 case study for Vigier Ciment says one robot had completed more than 33,000 inspections across 450 points during 16 months. Those operational numbers remain a jointly presented customer story rather than independently audited performance data.

8. Business model

ANYbotics appears to sell an end-to-end enterprise inspection solution rather than a standalone robot. The commercial package can include robot hardware, sensors, deployment planning, site mapping, commissioning, operator training, integration, customer support and Data Navigator. That structure addresses a common robotics failure mode: delivering impressive hardware without the workflow required for sustained use.

The likely buyers are operators of capital-intensive facilities in energy, metals, mining, chemicals, utilities and transportation. Their economic case may include reduced exposure to hazardous areas, more frequent readings, earlier anomaly detection and more efficient maintenance planning. Public pricing, contract duration, service fees and fleet-level economics have not been disclosed, so the balance between equipment sales and recurring software or support revenue remains unknown.

ANYbotics’ strongest strategic decision was narrowing the problem. Industrial inspection is repetitive, measurable and frequently performed in places where human access is costly or dangerous. A quadruped is not automatically the cheapest way to collect data, but it can cover stairs, grating and changing layouts without rebuilding the facility around automation.

The company also treats deployment as a systems problem. Sensors, mapping, commissioning, operator workflows and asset software are presented as one product. Outokumpu’s multi-site use and Petrobras’s disclosed purchase provide evidence that customers see value beyond demonstrations.

The unresolved question is scale. Public materials show individual deployments and a growing partner network, but do not reveal installed fleet size, recurring revenue or deployment profitability. ANYbotics has demonstrated that specialized legged robots can become useful industrial tools. It has not yet publicly demonstrated the economics of turning that success into a large, repeatable global business.
